After I left Bessemer I flunked out of the University of
Alabama, went to Auburn for four years, then did graduate work
at Florida State (Go 'Noles!) including a year in Florence
(not the real one in Alabama -- the fake one in Italy), and a
post-doctoral fellowship at U.C. Berkeley. I have been a
professor of philosophy at Saint Leo University, about a mile
from my home in central Florida, for twenty-four years. I
still love teaching. I
have played old-time banjo with "The New Sand Mountain
Wildcats" since 1977.
I have three daughters: Peige in
Germany; Elisabeth, in Salt Lake City; Ann Marie -- who knows?
I still have family (Carters) in
the Bessemer area. My sister Elizabeth (1950), her husband
Houston (1948?), their two sons Charles and Todd, the sons'
wives Kim and Julie, and the soon-to-be-born grandkids all
live around McCalla. |
