: BHS Class of ‘59

: 2002 - 1959 = 43 Naah, that can’t be right. I’d better get the ole Hewlett-Packard. 2002 enter, 1959 minus = 43 Holy Smoke, forty three years!
: Yes friends, it has been forty three years since we sat out on the football field that sweltering summer night waiting for our name to be called so that we could have our moment, the moment we worked and waited twelve years for, GRADUATION.
: I’ve been away from Bessemer for most of these forty three years, returning only for short visits with my parents. In the intervening years, I have seen very few of my classmates. As a matter of fact, the only two I can remember seeing in recent years are Sally Moore and Charlotte Schelleci. I talked to Sally for a few minutes but didn’t get to say hello to Charlotte, much to my regret.
: BHS, in it’s present role, looks much better than it did in 1959. I don’t imagine many of us can say the same.
: Good times? Lots of ‘em. Darned if I can pick out one in particular but there is one funny incident that I can remember as if it were yesterday. I don’t remember whether it was 1958 or ‘59 but I do remember it being the last day before Christmas Vacation and it happened in Miss Tolbert Griffin’s Geometry or Trig. Class, last period of the day. The last day before Christmas Vacation was a wasted school day, parties in almost every class. Nobody ever learned anything the last day except in Miss Prickett’s English Class. Everybody in Miss Griffin’s told their favorite joke that day, starting with the student in the front seat, right side of the room.
: I was sitting right behind Joey Miller in about the 5th seat in the second row. Judy Letson was sitting right beside Joe in the 3rd row. Why do I remember these details? Darned if I know why but they are important to this tale. Anyhow, when it came Judy’s turn, she walked up in front of the class and prefaced the joke with “I don’t see why this joke is so funny but everybody cracks up when I tell it.” That, in itself should pique your interest. I’m not going to repeat the joke here but I have told it at least a hundred times. Poor Judy, she didn’t have a clue at the time but just wait a minute.
: Judy told the joke, the class erupted in laughter and Miss Griffin hid her head on the desk. When Judy sat back down, Joe leaned over and whispered something in her ear. All I can figure is that he explained the joke to her. Judy jumped up blushing and fled the classroom.
: Other class memories? None in particular for me except the first day of the first grade in Miss Vinnie Shine’s class. I well remember Sammy Stevenson telling Bill Mims and me “Miss Shine is gonna shine your behind.”
: Hopefully, more memories can be shared by those of you who have stayed in contact with each other.
